JORDAN P. BARNES spent his early years in Hawai`i before moving to Portland, OR for the supposed “best years of his life.” While in college, his alcoholism ramped up and led to deeper and darker addictions, peaking with a multi-year intravenous heroin and cocaine addiction that lasted until 2011, when he entered a two-year, long-term inpatient facility at Sand Island Treatment Center in Honolulu Hawai`i. Now a grateful alcoholic and addict in recovery (clean date, Aug. 29th, 2011), Jordan is a substance use disorder advocate, homeowner, loving husband, proud father of two amazing sons, and an award-winning, best-selling author.

In February of 2021, Jordan made the decision to pursue his dream and commit to writing full-time. After the success of his first book, One Hit Away: A Memoir of Recovery, Jordan released a free book, Rules to Die By: A Heroin Addict’s Take on Life in Long-Term Recovery, followed by his first novel, Bridgetown: A Harm Reduction Novel (2022) and Late Blight in the Koʻolaus: A Novel (2023).

Media and Speaking Opportunities

“Jordan P. Barnes speaks as he writes, telling his story of hope and redemption honestly and with humility. His motives are simple. He is a man telling his truth, which at times is brutal and raw, in hopes that it may help others. He brings understanding to how truly hopeless an addict can become. His insights and experiences fly in the face of some of our typical beliefs about addiction and should cause us to want to examine what we think we know about it. At the same he provides strong support for the value of the social models of addiction treatment. Most importantly, it tells us there is still hope as long as just one person believes there is.”
